Interview with Mario Sposito


Mario Sposito is owner and sommelier at restaurant Taverna Estia. After receiving his degree in economics in London, Mario threw himself headlong into the family business, becoming head waiter and sommelier. Over time, he created a wine list that holds over 1000 labels, containing great choices from Campania and other great wine regions in Italy.  Honoured with two coveted Michelin stars, the regional Italian cuisine of Mario’s brother, chef Francesco Sposito, attracts visitors from near and far. We asked Mario some questions about his career, his favourite dish, and much more.

What has been the biggest change in the gastronomic industry since you started your career?

Keeping up with the increasingly passionate and informed guests we have here at Taverna Estia.

Which cuisine is your favourite and why?

I especially enjoy traditional Campania cuisine. Within it, the Campanian culture is brought to life.

What is your favourite dish on your restaurant’s menu?

Our delicious Cod Ventricelli tapas.

If a guest is feeling adventurous, which dish will definitely tickle their fancy?

Our millefeuille with vanilla cream and milk caramel.

What’s one thing in the area that your guests absolutely need to see or do?

Pay a visit to the excavations of Villa Augustea in Somma Vesuviana.
